Background: About the time Reticent began to begin her business career in Petroint, Wyatt was a teenager in the city. He grew up in a poor family of woodworkers, but chose to forego the family craft to pursue a career in medicine. The decision was difficult, and led to a falling out with his prideful father. Still, he continued on with his studies, and at the ripe age of 26 he finally received his doctorate in biologic alchemical chemistry. At the same time, a 34 year old Reticent had just become the world's first trillionaire, and had a vast majority of the government in her pocket.
In 3038 NG, a 30 year old Wyatt had now spent a full four years investing himself fully in his career, inventing a number of life-savings medicines. Every month, he sent his excess income to his mother and siblings, even his father despite their differences. Having crawled up from poverty and contributed to the public health, he felt a sense of pride and joy despite the troubling turmoil that had seemingly grown worse and worse in the city.
Then one day everyone in the lab was rounded up in a meeting room. Ponies in black suits handed out a chilling document, agents from Reticent Co. It detailed a substance that would be used to control a creature's mind, rendering them an obedient slave.
The agents asked who in the room could create such a drug. First came the questions, even laughs from those who thought it was a joke. A gun was drawn, and they were shot. Scientists scrambled for the exits, but they were all sealed. They were ordered to sit back down and answer the question. Those who refused were shot. Those who said they couldn't were shot. Those who said they wouldn't were shot.
By the end of the carnage, only a few terrified people remained, Wyatt among them. They asked again, and this time the answer was yes. They were locked in the lab, and forced to work under duress for the next four years. Stories were fabricated for their families or anyone who would miss them.
Wyatt didn't want to die, but he also didn't want to be responsible for a state of mind-controlled slaves. He created the drug like they asked, but sabotaged the design. It now rendered the subject obedient, but also fundamentally lobotomized, barely able to function.
Reticent came in person to see the first 'successful' test. Despite the obvious problems with the drug, she said it was acceptable, and let Wyatt go, giving him a gold coin with a rose engraved on it. Wyatt thought it might've just been a reminder, that they were watching.
When he finally arrived home, just in time for a yearly family reunion, there wasn't a family left to welcome him back. They were all murdered, arranged in a bloody spectacle just after he left the lab. Not just his immediate family, but every relative he had ever known. One agent lingered at the scene, and explained to him that it was his punishment for 'poor work performance', then left him alone, one of a hundred corpses.
Now 34, Wyatt had spent as much time in his career dedicated to harm as he had to health. He never got the chance to say goodbye, and his family died with the fabricated lie that Wyatt had moved on and considered himself too important to visit them anymore. As a final insult to injury, his bank accounts had all been drained.
He left the city, and wandered the other Equa provinces, getting by selling half-baked tonics in a state of manic denial.
